Frequently Asked Questions

01  Is this just another "academic" English/writing course?

My professional writing courses focus on clear, concise communication in the real world, and are customized to be relevant to specific professional fields and organizations. Redacted samples from actual professional documents are used whenever possible. While some of the courses' general writing practices may overlap with academic instruction, the emphasis is on improving productivity and efficiency through more effective writing techniques, not on impressing professors with inflated prose or verbose word choices.

04  How does individual coaching work?

Individual coaching can be conducted in person, by phone, or by videoconference. (Common video platforms include Skype, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts.) The most common type of schedule is a weekly coaching meeting of between 30 - 90 minutes. Between meetings, writer and coach exchange feedback and revisions via email or Google Docs. Total number of hours provided is based on the weekly schedule multiplied by the total length of service; most coaching experiences last between 8 - 12 weeks.

05  What other services do you offer?

Some clients find that in addition to training courses and coaching, more permanent writing resources can also help meet their needs. I offer video tutorials and accompanying downloadable materials that can be posted on an organization's intranet, for either on-demand training or simply "brush-ups" of best practices.

I can also create writing style guides specific to a particular organization: This is useful because the best practices in such a guide can be made specific to the types of writing done in that organization. Also, such a guide can serve as a reference for an organization's particular conventions, such as: preferred terminology, acronyms/initialisms, citation styles, or required legal language.

06  How do you determine pricing?

Pricing for courses is determined with a flat fee by day or half-day. Other services are determined with an hourly rate. For customized courses, an average of 5 -10 hours of course preparation is usually needed, at this same hourly rate. Please contact me for pricing estimates regarding individual classes or other services.
